Summerfield held off Sand Creek Friday, 12-8, halting the Aggies’ bid for its first win since the 2012 season.
Bulldog quarterback Zach Philipp gave Summerfield the lead with 3:28 left in the game, but the Aggies came back and had a chance to win the game on the last play of the game but Summerfield’s John Milkovich batted down an Aggie pass.
Summerfield is 2-1 and will host 3-0 Morenci Sept. 19.
The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard first when Zach Philipp completed a 27 yard touchdown pass to Levi Ladd with 4:17 remaining in the second quarter. The score remained 6-0 until the 5:09 mark of the 4th quarter when Trenden Peacock got in the end zone on a 1-yard QB sneak for the Aggies. Peacock passed to Charlie Robertson for the 2-pt conversion to give the Aggies their first lead of the night, 8 – 6.
After the ensuing kickoff, Summerfield started their next drive at their own 18-yard line with
5:05 remaining. Two key passes – one on a fourth-and-5 – put Summerfield down to the Aggie 1-yard line, leading to Philipp’s score.
The Aggies moved the ball all the way down to the Bulldog 9-yard line with seven seconds to go, but the clock started running once the chains were moved following the first down. Sand Creek was then called for illegal procedure on the next play, which brought the ball back to the 14-yard line when the pass fell incomplete, sealing the win for Summerfield.
