OTTAWA LAKE — Whiteford extended two streaks Tuesday night with a double header sweep against the Clinton Redskins.
By winning two matches over the Redskins, Whiteford improved to 13-0 on the season, clinching the TCC title outright. It’s the third straight league title and 40th and 41st straight TCC victories for the Bobcats.
“To win the TCC three years in a row is a testament to how hard this team has worked,” said Bobcat coach Kathy Albers. “It is hard to walk away with wins when people keep trying to tear you down.”
Clinton put up a fight, even winning a game in the first match as Redskin senior Shannon Hill served 10 straight points. But, the Bobcats bounced back quickly, led by seniors Janie Bunge, Kaleigh Funchion and Jessica Bubacz. Whiteford won the first match in four and the second in three sets.
Funchion had 31 kills and 37 digs on the night while Bunge added 32 kills and 23 digs. Bubacz added 80 assists and five blocks while junior Kelly Walker had 13 kills and five blocks for the 29-7-1 Bobcats.
Albers picked up her seventh TCC coaching title while the Bobcats have now won 23 TCC volleyball championships.
“They are a veteran team and they’ve been in a lot of big matches and tournaments,” first-year Clinton coach Kerri Morrison said. “We’re not there yet. We want to be, but we’re not there yet.”
In the first match, Hill went 19 of 20 serving with three aces and also had 15 digs in the first match. Pizzo led all hitters with 12 kills and going 38 of 47 hitting. In the nightcap, sophomore Makayla Thompson had five kills, 10 assists and went 13 for 13 in hitting while Hoelzer added 37 digs for Clinton.
With the setback, the Redskins fall to a record 16-7-2 overall and 10-2 in the TCC.
Whiteford’s final league match will come Thursday against Whitmore Lake.
