Three games involving four TCC teams are on tap tonight as the first round of the Michigan High School Football Playoffs begin.
Here’s a look:
Summerfield (5-4) at Morenci (8-1): Morenci is hosting its first playoff game since a 2003 loss to Sand Creek and hopes to win its first playoff game since 2001 against Whiteford. The Bulldogs beat Summerfield 56-0 earlier this season, but the Bulldogs have some weapons in quarterback Zach Philipp (1,600 yards passing), Chase Piorolli (700 yards rushing) and Josh VanKainen (nearly 800 yards receiving).
Lutheran Westland (5-4) at Whiteford (6-3): After losing to Morenci 49-0 in Week 7, the Bobcats were on the brink of not making the playoffs, let alone hosting a game. But, Whiteford responded with a 56-7 win against Madison and roared back in the second half to beat Sand Creek and earn the chance to host tonight’s game. LW has been dealing with injuries for much of the season. Whiteford’s Jesse Kiefer is 88 yards away from becoming Whiteford’s first sophomore to rush for 1,000 yards and first Bobcat to do so since 2006.
Manchester (8-1) at Clinton (9-0): The two schools are only a few miles apart, which is why the state seemingly always pairs them up come playoff time. Clinton opened its season by beating Manchester, just like it did two years ago when Manchester upset the Redskins in the playoffs. Two 1,000-yard rushers in Collin Poore and Matthew Sexton will try and prevent that from happening this time.
