Jared Janssen has been hired as the Britton-Deerfield baseball coach.
Janssen replaces D.J. Lutz, who resigned as both the BD varsity football and baseball coach. He had coached baseball one season.
“The BD program intrigued me because of the passion of baseball within the community,” Janssen said. “My goal is to install baseball knowledge into these young adults and teach the respect of the game of baseball.”
Janssen is a 2009 Ida High School graduate who played four years of college baseball between Mott Community College and Concordia University in Ann Arbor. He graduated from Concordia in 2013 and has served as an assistant baseball coach at Ida.
BD has been in the TCC for 20 seasons and has won three league championships and four District titles during that time. The Patriots went 19-6 and won a TCC title in 2013 under head coach Doug Witt and was 17-10 last year, when the Patriots advanced to the Division 4 quarterfinals for the first time.
BD’s best-ever season came in 2004 when the squad – led by future Major League Baseball player Duane Below – went 23-6, winning TCC and District championships.
“I understand the recent success and the pressure to continue that success but I love the challenge and would not want it any other way,” Janssen said.
The first baseball practice of 2015 will be March 9 with games beginning March 18.
