Bobcat coach Albers resigns

Kathy Albers

OTTAWA LAKE – The Whiteford Bobcats will open the 2015 volleyball season riding a 42-match TCC winning streak. If they are going to extend the streak, they are going to have to do it under a new coach.

Kathy Albers, who coached the Bobcats to seven Tri-County Conference championships in 13 seasons and is the winningest volleyball coach in school history, resigned Monday.

The Bobcats are coming off their third consecutive league crown and third straight 14-0 TCC season. Albers holds a record of 359-155-60 overall. She passed Sandy Clark in 2013 to become the winningest volleyball coach in Whiteford history. Only Clark (13) has more TCC volleyball titles as a coach than Albers.

Albers is a Whiteford graduate who played volleyball, basketball and softball for the Bobcats in the 1980s. Whiteford won District and Regional titles in 2013 under Coach Albers and lost to eventual Class C state champion SMCC in the District semifinals this season.

The longest winning streak in TCC volleyball history is 46 straight wins by Morenci from 1986 to 1988.

The resignation was accepted at Monday’s Whiteford school board meeting.
