Estes makes successful return to the court

Ron Estes hadn’t coached a varsity boys basketball game in 15 years, but made it look easy Tuesday.

Estes, coaching the Blissfield boys basketball team for the first time, guided the Royals to a 61-48 win over Whiteford. The Royals jumped out to early leads of 5-0, 13-4 and 25-7 and led by as many as 26 points in beating the Bobcats in the season opener for both teams.

Mitchell Iott – the only returning starter for the Bobcats – scored 14 points and pulled down 7 rebounds to lead the Bobcats.

Felipe Cazares led all scorers with 16 for the Royals.

Estes last coached boys varsity basketball in 1999-00 when he coached at Summerfield in the TCC. He went on to coach the Blissfield Royal football team for several seasons before stepping down two seasons ago. This is his first season back coaching hoops.

The Royals host Clinton Thursday.
