OTTAWA LAKE – Whiteford three-sport athlete Janie Bunge has officially announced her intent to attend Grand Rapids Community College to play volleyball.
Bunge was joined by her family, Whiteford Athletic Director Nate Gust and Kris Hubbard, longtime Bobcat softball coach, for a brief ceremony recently in the high school library.
Bunge was a four-year starter on the Whiteford volleyball team and was Second Team All-State by the Michigan Interscholastic Volleyball Coaches Association as a senior. The Bobcats won three consecutive Tri-County Conference championships and more than 40 consecutive league matches during Bunge’s four years. Whiteford advanced to the Class C Quarterfinals in 2014.
Bunge has also excelled in basketball, where she scored more than 1,000 points in her career, and softball at Whiteford. Her senior season of softball is about to begin. She will conclude her athletic career at Whiteford with 12 varsity letters.
In 2014, Bunge was named the Monroe County Region Female Athlete of the Year.
Grand Rapids Community College is a nationally-recognized volleyball National Junior College Athletic Association Division II powerhouse. The Raiders were the 2012 national champions and Regional champions in 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 under head coach Chip Will, national coach of the year in 2012.
