Bobcats give TCC two semifinal teams

By DOUG DONNELLY

CLIMAX – It was a record-setting Saturday for the Whiteford Bobcats.

Whiteford quarterback Thomas Eitniear completed all 10 of his passes for a school-record 292 yards and four touchdowns – tying a school mark – as the Bobcats beat Climax-Scotts 48-14 Saturday to win the first Regional title in school history.

The Bobcats will play in the Division 8 semifinals next weekend – the first semifinal appearance in school history.

Jesse Kiefer caught five passes for a school-record 183 yards, including a school-record 97-yard TD reception. Kiefer scored four TDs and three two-point conversions in all, establishing a school record for points in a season (152) and TDs in a season (22).

Whiteford coach Jason Mensing said he thought the difference was the Bobcats played a tougher schedule that the Panthers. Whiteford tied for second in the Tri-County Conference. The TCC champ – Clinton – is still alive in Division 6. The two teams Whiteford tied for second with in the TCC were the two teams Whiteford beat in the District.

“We have played some really good teams. I think we were mentally prepared,” the fourth-year Bobcat coach said. “This is what high school football is about. Look at my guys celebrating right now. This is what they work hard for.”

Climax-Scotts was held to under 100 yards rushing and 75 yards passing. The Bobcats rolled up 565 yards of total offense and a season-high 23 first downs. Climax-Scotts entered the game having given up just 39 points all season. The Bobcats had 40 at halftime.

Panther coach Kevin Langs was impressed by the Bobcats, who will face Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes in the D8 semifinals next weekend.

“I will be interested to see how they match up with WOLL,” Langs said. “Whiteford has the tools to match up with them.”
