Can Clinton climb one final mountain?

It’s been a remarkable run for the Clinton football team.

The Redskins will play today in the Division 6 state championship game at Ford Field in Detroit. Clinton is seeking to become the first football team in TCC history to win a state title. They are the fifth team to play for a championship:

TCC teams in state final (0-4)

1992 Class D: Lake Linden-Hubbell 16, Sand Creek 3

1995 Class C: Muskegon Catholic Central 19, Morenci 7

1996 Class C: Ravenna 30, Morenci 14

2013 D6: Ithaca 41, Clinton 22

The path to the state finals has been extraordinary.

“We are a small school,” Clinton coach Scott McNitt said, “just a small school in rural area.”

No matter what happens today at 4:30 in the state finals, no one can take away from Clinton what it has done in the playoffs.

“First, we had to go on the road to take on the defending state champions (SMCC) on their field. They are an outstanding team.

“After winning that game, we had to play Madison Heights, a team that has made multiple long playoff run and they are big, fast and strong this year. Then, we had a home game against Jackson Lumen Christi, a tremendous challenge, and last weekend we had to go to a neutral site and play in a blizzard against a monster team (Northpointe Christian) with a great quarterback.

“It’s just been an amazing run. We’ve handed it very well.”

Clinton’s 13-0 and tied its own league record for overall victories in a season.

Clinton, 2014………………………………………………………13-0

Clinton, 2013………………………………………………………13-1

Sand Creek, 1992…………………………………………………12-1

Morenci, 1995……………………………………………………..12-1

Morenci, 1996……………………………………………………..12-1

Britton-Deerfield, 1999…………………………………………12-1

Britton-Deerfield, 2000…………………………………………12-1

This year alone, the Redskins have beaten eight playoff teams – Manchester, Morenci, Summerfield, Whiteford, SMCC, Madison Heights Madison, Jackson Lumen Christi, North Pointe Christian.

Ithaca would be another monumental task, but one the Redskins appear to be ready for the challenge. One thing is for certain, Redskin nation can’t wait for the challenge to begin.

“We are both talented football teams,” McNitt said. “But, at the same time, how much do we have left in the tank? It’s going to be a battle.”
