SAND CREEK — Sand Creek’s girls basketball team played nearly the entire second half Monday without their head coach, Matt Benge, who left the Class C District game shortly after halftime after experiencing heart discomfort.
He was taken to a hospital in Adrian and later transported by medical helicopter to the University of Michigan Hospital, Ann Arbor. School officials said late Monday that Benge was undergoing tests.
Benge missed a couple of late-season games due to a heart issue. He returned to the bench Friday in the Aggies win over Britton Deerfield and had a limited work schedule of late.
Assistant coaches Amanda Ream and Ben Pawson coached the remainder of Monday’s game. Ream said she called a timeout during the game and told the team that Benge had left the game against Madison.
“By the time the game was over, he was already in the air,” Ream said.
Sand Creek lost, 43-34, to finish the season 15-6.
