Mellon to play college hoops at Siena Heights

Bladen Mellon wasn’t expecting to play college basketball. But, that’s just what the former Morenci athlete will be doing this winter.

Mellon has decided to enroll at Siena Heights University in Adrian and will join the men’s basketball program. As a senior, Mellon averaged about 13 points a game and made 50 three-pointers.

“It was always my dream to play at the next level,” Mellon said. “That’ what I’ve wanted to do since I was a kid.”

Mellon said after the season Morenci coach Jim Bauer asked him what his college plans were. When he mentioned playing basketball, Bauer started putteling together video clips of Mellon and sending them to colleges. Siena Heights coach Joe Pescoda invited Mellon in for some workouts and ended up inviting Mellon to the team.

Alex Thomas, another recent Morenci graduate and athlete, recently signed with the Bulldogs to play football. Mellon said the two would likely end up living together.

“We’ve been friends forever,” Mellon said. “We grew up together. He’s one of the reasons I chose Siena Heights.”
