Whiteford’s undefeated football team will play in the Division 8 state football championship game at 10 a.m. Friday.
The Bobcats will be attempting to become first TCC team in league history to win a state title. They are the third team in five years to play in the state championship game – Clinton being the previous two (2013, 2015). The other league teams to play in the finals were Sand Creek (1992) and Morenci (1995, 1996).
One of the connections the Bobcats have to the 1995 and 1996 Morenci team is Jay Gilmore. Gilmore, the son of longtime Morenci coach Jim Gilmore, has been a Whiteford assistant coach for five seasons, coming to Whiteford at the same time as current head coach Jason Mensing. He played for the Bulldogs in the 1995 state finals.
Whiteford earned the right to play for the state title against three-time defending state champion Muskegon Catholic Central by beating Saginaw Michigan Lutheran Seminary, 40-21, in the semifinals on Saturday.
