Drought ends for Aggies – the 2016-17 boys basketball league champs

Sand Creek put an exclamation point on its 2016-17 TCC boys basketball season Tuesday, defeating Whiteford 55-40 to clinch the outright TCC title.

It was Sand Creek’s first league boys basketball championship since the 1996-97 season. Seven different TCC schools have won league titles since the Aggies last won it under head coach Charlie Risner. It’s the ninth overall TCC title since Sand Creek joined the league in 1975-76.

The title comes in Tory VanSickle’s third season at Sand Creek. Just four years ago, the Aggies went through three seasons of 1-win, 3-wins and 5-wins. VanSickle is 36-24 as the Aggie head coach.

Hunter Gallagher (15), Parker Randall (13) and Noah Hague (11) led the Aggies Tuesday. The Bobcats were led by Hunter Lake’s 10 points while its leading scorer – Thomas Eitniear – was held to a season-low two points in an outstanding defensive effort by Sand Creek.

The Bobcats scored just 13 points in the first half and made only 15 of 54 shots for the game.

Sand Creek shared the 1996-97 league title with Deerfield. Since then, Britton (3), Madison (5), Morenci (4), Whiteford (2), Whitmore Lake (2), Summerfield (2) and Clinton (3) have all won league boys basketball championships.

Sand Creek – ranked No. 4 in the latest Associated Press Class C Boys Basketball poll – improved to 17-0 on the regular season and are now trying to become the first league team since the 2002-03 Bobcats to go 20-0 on the regular season.

Sand Creek is at Morenci Friday then close the season with home games against Hillsdale Academy (Feb. 28) and Hudson (March 2) before entering District play.
