Opsal steps down from Madison volleyball post

After more than 600 wins, five TCC championships and a state semifinal appearance in 2016, Madison volleyball coach Dawn Opsal is stepping down.

The Trojans went 10-16-1 in her first season, 1999. Since then, Madison has had just one sub-.500 season. In her 20 seasons, Madison went 607-264-84. Three teams reached 50 wins – the 2010 team went 51-4-2, the 2011 team was 52-5-1 and the 2016 team finished 57-4-2. In TCC play, Opsal’s teams went 221-60-1.

Three seasons ago, the school district honored her by hanging her jersey on the wall in the Madison Activities Center.

“That was such a surprise,” she said. “I was honored. “I’ve been at Madison all of my life. I love it here. I’m very passionate about the sport of volleyball. I can’t even imagine not walking into the gymnasium.”
