Clinton, Summerfield & Whiteford moving on in state tournaments

The Tri-County Conference will have two softball teams and one baseball teams in the Regional round of the state tournament next weekend.

Clinton and Whiteford won softball District championships Saturday while Summerfield’s baseball team brought home a District title of its own.

Clinton won its 13th straight District title with back-to-back shutouts by Renee Hoffman, who blanked Grass Lake 7-0 and Onsted 1-0. Hoffman had 18 strikeouts in the finals, allowing just one hit, vs. Onsted. The Redskins will play three-time defending state champion Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central in the regional that it hosts. Napoleon plays Stockbridge in the other semifinal.

Whiteford beat Summerfield and Morenci in its softball district, winning its 22nd all-time district and fifth in the last six seasons. The Bobcats will face Burr Oak in the Regional semifinal at Hudson. North Adams-Jerome will play Waldron in the other game.

Summerfield blanked Whiteford 6-0 and Britton Deerfield 10-0 to win the District hosted by Lenawee Christian. BD knocked off the ninth-ranked Cougars in the semifinals. The Bulldogs will face Concord at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hudson. Reading and Hudson play in the second game.
